Public transit is coming soon to Shenandoah County. Over the last three years, the Shenandoah County offices of economic and community development, local governments in the Towns of New Market, Edinburg, Woodstock, Toms Brook, and Strasburg, the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission (NSVRC), the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) and the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce have been working closely to bring this project to fruition. The Transit service will begin on October 4, 2021, with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for October 1 starting at 2:00 pm at the Shenandoah County Government Center.

The ShenGo Transit system will be operated by Virginia Regional Transit (VRT) using Starcraft Allstar buses.  All buses are ADA accessible and equipped with a lift for access.  The buses will have two areas to secure mobility devices such as wheel chairs and walkers and 12 passenger seats.  The Allstar bus is engineered and designed for safety and comfort and offers additional customer comfort items such as air conditioning, comfortable seating, and LED destination signage.  The ShenGo logo will be visible on the exterior of the bus for easy identification.

The ShenGo Transit system has been made possible through the generous support from local sponsors including RideSmart, Valley Health/ Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, New Market Poultry, and Walmart. This project was initially spearheaded by the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce after years of realizing the increasing number of residents in need of reliable transportation to and from work, medical appointments, shopping, etc.

"The Chamber has been working diligently on behalf of our businesses and the citizens of Shenandoah County to bring a bus system to our community. This has been needed for a long time. We are so pleased with the financial support that our County and Town elected officials have provided to make these shuttle busses a reality. This is a great move forward towards a stronger economy and workforce." David Hutton, Chairman, Chamber Board of Directors.

Valley Health/ Shenandoah Memorial Hospital is anticipated to be a major stop for those riding the transit.  Tammy Gasper FACHE Vice President, Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, stated, "We are excited to have the opportunity to support the public transportation project in Shenandoah County. This is a much needed service to help our community members have access to healthcare. So often, our patients voice the need for means of transportation in order to receive the care they need."

“Transportation for the most vulnerable members of our community has been a critical need observed by those working in many of the nonprofit organizations in Shenandoah County. The new shuttle bus system will help fill a void for residents needing reliable transportation to and from work, medical appointments, and shopping.” Marla Boulter, Nonprofit Council Chair, Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce.

“The Town of Woodstock is proud to work with the Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce and our local, regional, and state government partners to build connectivity along the Route 11 corridor of Shenandoah County.  This project will benefit local businesses and boost town and regional economic development, by providing our residents with access to businesses, work, healthcare, and other needs.” Jeremy D. McCleary, Woodstock Mayor.

“We heard from our Chamber of commerce representing various businesses as well as those in health and human services that this was a need in our community.  We elected to participate in this demonstration project to test the feasibility of a long-term commitment to a public transit system in our county.  We are anxious to see it begin.” Said Steve Baker, Chairman of the Shenandoah County Board of Supervisors.

“ShenGo is a wonderful and much needed resource for the citizens of Shenandoah County.  Lack of transportation is a barrier to success and health for many of our citizens, and we cannot wait to see the positive impact that this service has on the physical and mental health of our community. Thank you to everyone involved in making this a reality. It would not have been possible without our generous donors, and the dedicated leadership of our Shenandoah County Chamber of Commerce, the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission (NSVRC), and the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT).” Said Brandy Boies, Strasburg Mayor.

The bus transit system will travel north and south along the Route 11 Corridor, Monday through Saturday from 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. with multiple stops during each two-hour trip. The riders will pay $1.00 for a one-way fare and children 12 and under will ride for free.
